Turbot Shingle

Caught:
off the Cornish coast

Landed in:
Newlyn

Fast, powerful, and highly prized, this delicate flatfish is a coveted treasure of the sea.

The story of Turbot Shingle

This turbot was hauled in along the sandy, gravelly shores around Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, where traces of historic shipwrecks litter the seabed. Though smooth and scaleless, its head and body were studded with bony nodules that steadfastly resisted my paint. Inspired by this “King of Fish”, I created alternative colourways to surprisingly different effect; each depicting its character and natural environment.
