My process

My designs are immersed in character and place, meaning that no two are ever alike.

Local sourcing

Nature lies at the heart of my work. From the moors of west Penwith to the scattered Isles of Scilly, this is a place teeming with life and inspiration. As a “Newlyn Girl” and a part of the community, I’m able to source the freshest fish, straight from the boat.

Intuitive embellishment

With the initial print taken, I begin embellishing its natural features with intricate hand-drawn designs in pen and ink. Over many days, I’ll then painstakingly interpret the personality of each subject through sight, touch, and intuition.

Taking prints

Using the Gyotaku method, I first cover my fish or plant specimen with paint before applying paper over the top and carefully rubbing it to transfer the impression. This creates an immediate imprint of the subject, which becomes the foundation of my design.

A circular approach

For me, this artistic process is only a pause on the wider journey from fishing boat to plate. So, when the creative work is done, I cook each fish with care. In this way, nothing is wasted, and every design is completely traceable, from its initial catch to the way it was eaten.

Curated design collections

From every completed artwork, I’m able to create a versatile and ever-evolving selection of designs. With tailored colour palettes and the option to take a micro or macro view of patterns, a single work can yield a complementary array of design choices.

This flexible approach means that designs can be created in a way that’s entirely bespoke, according to a client’s individual vision. They can also be applied to a wide variety of materials, including fabric, leather, slate, carpet, and wood, making them settle naturally into any space.

Values and mission

With sustainability and circularity as my driving passion, a respect for the sea and its creatures shines through my creative journey.
